(ORDO NEWS) — Due to the abolition of anti-COVID restrictions in China, the death rate among the country’s scientific elite has risen sharply.
In particular, only in the Engineering Academy of China, 20 scientists died between December 15 and January 4.
The publication notes that from 2017 to 2021, an average of 16 members of the academy per year died there, and 13 deaths were recorded in 2021. The cause of their death has not been revealed.
A doctor at a hospital in Beijing said that academics used to receive privileged treatment, along with members of the political elite.
However, against the backdrop of an increase in the number of cases of coronavirus, “it will still be lucky if the patient finds a place in the hospital corridor” due to a lack of beds.
Another problem he called the depletion of health care resources, which makes it difficult to treat other diseases.
In late December, China’s hospitals and funeral homes were reported to be under heavy strain due to the coronavirus after the authorities lifted tough restrictions.
Medics from a hospital in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, said the facility is overcrowded, queues have formed inside and outside the emergency room, and almost all incoming patients are diagnosed with COVID-19.
The parking lots at the largest funeral home in the city are also overcrowded. According to employees, they have to cremate 200 people a day, while before it was 30-50.
