(ORDO NEWS) — China has selected near-Earth object 2020 PN1 as a target for a combined asteroid deflection and observation test project. It should start its work in 2026.
Long Lehao, chief designer of the Chinese Long March rocket series , spoke about the new details of the future space mission.
The slide presented by Long indicates that the mission, which will launch in 2026 on a Long March 3B rocket, will include an impact probe and an orbiter.
The first will collide with the near-Earth object 2020 PN1, and the second will conduct observations.
The target of the Chinese test is asteroid 2020 PN1, which does not pose a danger to Earth. The space object was discovered in 2020 and its size is about 40 meters in diameter.
