(ORDO NEWS) — The foreign ministers of Nepal and China at a joint ceremony announced the new height of Everest, the Ministry of Land Management of Nepal said, which posted a video of the meeting.
“Three years ago, our countries agreed to jointly measure the height of Mount Chomolungma … Based on the data of the research departments of the two countries, it is a great honor for me to announce the new height of Mount Chomolungma, which is 8848.86 meters,” Nepal Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali said during meeting held in the format of a video conference.
The agreement on a joint measurement of Everest was reached during the visit last year of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Nepal. The need for a new measurement arose after a number of scientists suggested that the mountain could have shrunk due to an earthquake in 2015.
The most powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 occurred in Nepal on April 25, 2015. The next day, Nepal was hit by a series of aftershocks, and about two weeks later, the country was hit by a new earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3. Then, as a result of two natural disasters, about 9 thousand people died, more than 22 thousand people suffered.
Nepal and China disagreed over the height of Everest after China unilaterally announced the height of Everest at 8,844.04 meters in 2015 versus the generally recognized 8,848 meters. Due to the difference in the height of Mount Everest, Nepal and China were also unable to sign the border protocol.
