(ORDO NEWS) — Mother of many children Rachel Ridgway from Oregon, USA, gave birth to twins Lydia and Timothy, whose embryos were frozen 30 years ago. It is reported by CNN.
The embryos were conceived by in vitro fertilization (IVF) and frozen on April 22, 1992. In 2007, a couple who were to use the fetuses donated them to the National Embryo Donation Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.
They were stored in liquid nitrogen at minus 196 degrees Celsius. And only three decades later, on October 31, 2022, Lydia and Timothy were born.
Rachel and her husband Philip, who already had four children before the birth of twins, said they immediately decided on the IVF procedure when they learned about the possibility of using donor embryos.
“We didn’t aim to get the longest-frozen embryos in the world. We just wanted the ones that waited the longest,” says Filip.
Of the five embryos, only three were viable, two of which successfully developed in the womb. Lydia’s weight after birth was 2.6 kilograms, and Timothy – 2.9 kilograms. “This is really God’s mercy, because He supported us at every step,” says the father.
