Careful study of the W-boson has turned the understanding of the structure of the universe

(ORDO NEWS) — Careful study and measurements of the fundamental particle of the W-boson revealed that it has a much larger mass than previously thought.

According to scientists, if the data is confirmed, it will change the understanding of the structure of the universe. The results of the work are described in the journal Science.

The W boson is an electrically charged fundamental particle that carries the so-called weak force, just as the photon is the carrier particle for the electromagnetic force.

In addition, the traditional model of the structure of the Universe is based on the W-boson, and the latest measurements revealed contradictions: seven standard deviations, called sigmas, were found in this particle.

The study was conducted by a group of international scientists from Duke University (USA), Cambridge University (UK) and the National Center for Scientific Research (France), its accuracy was up to 0.01 percent, which is twice as accurate as previous studies.

To do this, more than 400 scientists have been recording and studying data from 450 trillion particle collisions for ten years. Most of the work was carried out at the Tevatron collider in the US state of Illinois.
