By the end of the 21st century, people will have an additional artery
(ORDO NEWS) — According to the conclusions of scientists, in recent years, the evolution of people is much faster than several centuries ago. So, in adults, an artery in the forearm is increasingly preserved, which should disappear about two months after birth.
Experts from the University of Flinders and the University of Adelaide noted that the artery that disappears in infancy is more and more preserved today. It is not replaced by the radial and ulnar arteries, but are formed in addition. As a result, all 3 arteries are preserved.
The developmental feature of the body was noticed in the 1880s. Then 10% of the population were carriers of an additional artery. Already in the 20th century, the number of cases exceeded 30%, and today it is 35%. From the statistics, we can conclude that in eight decades, most of the world‘s inhabitants will have a median artery.
Anatomists see only one explanation – gene mutation. The artery is not only preserved, it is enlarged. Experts do not see a problem in what is happening, since the median artery speeds up blood circulation. During operations, it can be used in other parts of the body.
Artery preservation is a perfect example of evolution. No species on Earth is perfect, therefore it is constantly changing.
