Popular breast augmentation surgery can have serious health consequences, warn scientists from St. Petersburg State University. Their study found that silicone breast implants may cause immune system dysfunction, particularly noting risks for thyroid disorders.
The study was conducted on more than one hundred women who underwent breast augmentation surgery using silicone implants. The necessary tests were taken before surgery, as well as three, six and twelve months after it.
Experts have found a significant increase in the level of autoantibodies to the thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSH) in women with silicone implants. This hormone plays a key role in regulating the functioning of the thyroid gland.
As a result, women with silicone implants have an increased autoimmune reaction to TSH receptors, which signals an increased risk of developing autoimmune thyroid diseases.
