US, NEW YORK (ORDO NEWS) — A NATO helicopter crashed Wednesday at sea near the Greek island of Kefalonia.
According to him, the Italian frigate and other NATO ships went to the disaster area to take part in the search and rescue operation. The wreckage of the car was discovered at sea about 85 km from Kefalonia in the Flight Information Region of Italy. This is approximately 20 nautical miles outside the Athens flight information area. On board the helicopter were six people whose fate is unknown.
According to preliminary information, the helicopter accident occurred in the area for which the Italian side is responsible. At the moment, NATO did not request any assistance from Greece, the pilots also did not contact the Greek side. However, Athens made it clear that they were ready to assist in the search operation.
Rescuers found the body of one who died in the crash area of a NATO helicopter, Star Channel reported . Part of the fuselage was also discovered. Search and rescue operation continues.
According to sources in the Ministry of National Defense of Greece, the incident occurred at 20:15 local time (the same as Moscow time), when a Chinook-type helicopter, taking off from the Canadian frigate Fredericton, disappeared from the radar screens. The frigate is part of the NATO permanent group SNMG2, located in the Mediterranean.
