BREAKING: Germany detects first case of South African coronavirus infection

The first case of infection with the South African strain of coronavirus was detected in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany , the Ministry of Social Policy and Land Integration said.

“The mutated version of B.1.351 was first discovered in a family that arrived in Baden-Württemberg from South Africa on December 13, 2020. This is the first known case in Germany,” the agency said in a press release.

After arriving, the family was in quarantine, the ministry said. Five days later, all family members passed tests for coronavirus, which turned out to be negative. After a few days, they began to develop mild symptoms.

A repeat test of the person who fell ill first in the family was sent to a laboratory, which confirmed the case of infection with a strain from South Africa. Currently, the coronavirus has been detected in six people from three households.

Strain 501.V2 or B.1.351 was first identified in South Africa in October. According to the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC), the virus is now the dominant form of the virus in South Africa.

Preliminary studies have shown that this strain, like the one found in the UK, is more contagious, but there is no evidence yet that it affects the severity of the disease.
