Botanical architecture on Mars: Colonizers of the Red Planet will be able to live in mushroom houses
(ORDO NEWS) — Architecture firm Red House is working with NASA and experts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to develop and test new technologies for building extraterrestrial homes.
Future colonists of Mars are planning to settle in houses created from mushrooms and algae.
Red House engineers propose mixing algae with mycelium (mycelium) to create a sustainable building material that experts say will be stronger than concrete and better protect against cosmic rays than most building materials.
The prepared mixture is planned to be sent to the Red Planet, where special robots will be able to add carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water to it, which they will extract in advance on Mars.
Then, as a result of the reaction, oxygen will be formed, which will be useful for feeding the mushrooms, and the mycelium will begin to grow and reach the desired shape. Thus, houses will be grown on Mars.
