US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Together with its report on the financial position of the concern for 2019, the BMW Group also announced some plans for the future. Next year, the company plans to begin a large-scale reduction in the number of models with traditional ICEs.
“Up to 50% of the traditional powertrain options will be excluded from the range from 2021 as part of the transition to the creation of intelligent transport architectures,” BMW said in an official statement.
At the same time, it is specified that the apotheosis of the mentioned reduction should fall on the period after 2022.
In addition, the company did not exclude the possibility of abandoning some niche models or modifications to existing models that are not in special demand.
However, at the same time, BMW is not going to stop expanding into undeveloped segments so far, although it has been stipulated that it will be primarily about the most profitable sectors.
Perhaps this should be considered a hint of the imminent appearance of fundamentally new off-road vehicles.
In general, a large-scale reform was conceived for the sake of maximum savings: the concern needs funds to develop new hybrid and electric models, and therefore BMW expects to save up to 12 billion euros by reducing the model range.
BMW sees serious potential in electric cars: according to the group’s analysts, next year the demand for green vehicles will double and subsequently will grow annually by at least 30%.
Accordingly, the Bavarian company expects to replenish its lineup with 25 new electric cars and hybrids by 2023.
