(ORDO NEWS) — Biologists from the University of Oxford warn that cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs that live in the African savannah are on the verge of extinction.
Man served as the reason for such a plight of animals – because of people they lose their natural habitat and prey. In addition, cheetahs also suffer from poaching – their skin is highly valued.
The researchers believe that the decline in the animal population could have been avoided, but the situation was missed, as all attention was focused on lions, leopards and other large predators.
“Conservation efforts are heavily biased towards lions and striped hyenas, despite the latter being the species with the widest continental range,” the scientists noted.
Hyenas are common throughout Africa, numbering more than 100 thousand individuals, but in the savanna their number is sharply reduced.
There are fewer than 8,000 cheetahs in all of Africa. Wild dogs are in the most deplorable situation – only 70 adults remain in the wild.
