(ORDO NEWS) — Paradox: biodegradable bathrobes are much worse for the environment than plastic ones! American researchers came to this conclusion. Let’s see how it works.
The use of disposable plasticized medical gowns – both conventional and biodegradable – has skyrocketed since the COVID-19 pandemic. So now the landfills are full of them.
And because biodegradable bathrobes degrade faster than regular bathrobes, there is a perception that they are a more environmentally friendly option through less space use and chronic landfill emissions. However, scientists have refuted this fact.
Biodegradable medical gowns actually pose serious environmental problems due to greenhouse gas emissions, according to a new study.
Ordinary plasticized medical gowns decompose over many years, while biodegradable gowns decompose much faster, but at the same time, they release gases, such as added methane and carbon dioxide, more quickly, the scientists said.
The researchers also concluded that the production of biodegradable bathrobes has an 11% higher level of ecotoxicity than conventional alternatives.
Striking comparison
According to the study, conventional bathrobes are 14% less toxic to humans, cause 10% less greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 10% less toxic to fresh water compared to biodegradable bathrobes.
This leads to pollution of the Earth‘s atmosphere, which in turn can have a sad impact on human health: polluted air can cause serious illness, allergies, and even death.
