(ORDO NEWS) — Microsoft founder Bill Gates is ‘inspired’ by advances in artificial intelligence (AI) but worries that ‘malicious’ forces could use robots to rule the world.
Bill Gates believes that governments should take control of the development of robots in order to stop the “malicious” forces using them to rule the world.
The multi-billionaire said he is excited and inspired by advances in AI that, if used “for good”, could boost education, healthcare, business and lifestyles while reducing global inequality and poverty.
However, if the AIs fall into the wrong hands, they can be manipulated by real-life James Bond-style villains to achieve their twisted ends.
In the same way, out of control super-intelligent machines can “get out of control” and decide for themselves that “humans are a threat.”
Bill Gates is not the only one who has been warning about the dangers of AI lately. For example, The Terminator director James Cameron said that robots may already be controlling us.
Gates said: “Like most inventions, artificial intelligence can be used for both good and bad purposes.
Governments need to work with the private sector on ways to limit risk. Otherwise, there is a chance that the AI will get out of control.”
“Can a machine decide that humans are a threat, conclude that its interests are different from ours, or just stop caring about us?”
Bill said that super-intelligent AIs would be developed that would think so fast that the human brain would “work at a snail’s pace” by comparison.
“It will be able to do everything that the human brain can, but without any practical limits on the size of its memory or the speed at which it works. It will be a profound change,” he said.
These strong AIs, as they are called, will probably be able to set their own targets. What will these goals be?
What happens if they come into conflict with the interests of humanity? Should we try to prevent the development of strong AI? Over time, these questions will become more relevant.
The Microsoft founder also called the development of AI “exciting” and emphasized the benefits it can bring.
He added: “I was lucky to be part of the PC revolution and the internet revolution.
I’m just as excited about this moment. This new technology can help people around the world improve their lives.”
“At the same time, the world needs to establish rules of the road so that any disadvantages of artificial intelligence far outweigh its benefits, and that everyone can enjoy those benefits no matter where they live or how much money they have.”
Israeli historian, Hebrew University professor Yuval Noah Harari said that the pace of development of artificial intelligence not only amaze, but also frighten him.
