US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — When the US announced last week that it was sending two warships to the Black Sea, given rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine, the Kremlin urged them to stay away from Crimea. Now Turkey reports that the passage of American ships through the Bosphorus did not take place. The ships turned back.
US warships heading towards the Black Sea reportedly turned back after Russia urged Joe Biden’s military forces to stay out of the region.
Turkish diplomatic sources said that the passage of the first American ship through the Bosphorus, scheduled for Wednesday, did not take place. Turkey was not officially warned about the schedule changes, but according to the Anadolu news agency, the redeployment of ships has been canceled.
Earlier, the Kremlin called on US ships not to approach Crimea “for their own good.” He called the dispatch of ships to the Black Sea a provocation in order to test Russia’s patience.
“The United States is our adversary, doing everything to undermine Russia’s position in the international arena,” said Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, according to news agencies. – We see no other elements in their approach to us. The conclusions are as follows.”
Turkey announced last week that it had been warned of the passage of two US warships “towards the Black Sea.” They were going to stay in the region until May 4th. Under the terms of the Montreux Convention on the Status of the Straits of 1936, Washington is obliged to notify Turkey no later than 15 days before the passage of ships through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles. Foreign warships are allowed to remain in the Black Sea up to 21 days.
US Navy ships regularly visit the region to support Ukraine, which continues to clash with Russian-backed forces in the east. The United States announced last week that it is sending ships back to the Black Sea in the face of escalating tensions between Moscow and Kiev over Russian troops near the Ukrainian border.
Earlier, Russia announced that 15 more of its ships would appear in the Black Sea. They will pass through a network of canals and rivers in order to get from the Caspian Sea to the Azov Sea, and then to the Black Sea. This is how Vladimir Putin flexes his muscles, who, after mobilizing tens of thousands of troops, is accused of planning an attack.
Photographs of the maneuvers of the Russian Black Sea Fleet also appeared today. The frigate “Admiral Makarov”, small rocket ships “Graivoron” and “Vyshny Volochek”, the hovercraft “Samum”, the minesweeper “Ivan Golubets” and large landing ships took part in them. Ukraine also held naval exercises off the coast of Crimea.
It is said that three more Russian warships “Minsk”, “Kaliningrad” and “Korolev” left the Baltic Sea and headed for the Black Sea. Russia is transferring landing ships from the Caspian Sea to the Black Sea for the first time since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
