US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Some time ago we already wrote about a series of cases of mass death of bees in many countries. Recall that bees are not only a source of honey, but also the most important link in the pollination of many plants.
And here is a new case. Over 50 million bees were found dead last week in the Medjimurje district of Croatia, prompting the country’s authorities to even declare a natural disaster.
At the beginning of the week, 20 beekeepers reported that about 600 hives had bee families dead. It is believed that the cause of the environmental disaster was pesticide poisoning, although this has not yet been confirmed.
The authorities decided that the Institute of Public Health of Medjimurje County will conduct analyzes of honey, and the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the Veterinary Department of Zagreb will determine whether death has occurred from bee diseases.
A study will also be conducted on possible effects on human health. It was also decided to provide financial assistance to beekeepers in order to eliminate damage as soon as possible and protect the remaining bees.
