(ORDO NEWS) — Doctors are advised only in case of emergency to prescribe antibiotics from the group of fluorine quinolones (Fluorchinolone) due to possible serious side effects. This was announced today by the Federal Institute of Medicines and Medical Products (BfArM).
Fluoroquinolones are contained in such preparations: ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin.
Antibiotics of the fluoroquinolone group belong to reserve antibiotics, that is, to those prescribed when other antibiotics do not work. But doctors prescribe fluoroquinolones too often. For example, in 2015, almost 6 million packages of antibiotic were sold in Germany. According to studies by the Bremen Institute, 50% of all women with cystitis prescribe fluoroquinolones.
Due to the severe side effects that occur in rare cases, BfArM experts strongly recommend that you do not use these antibiotics for mild infections and moderate infections.
Quinolones fluoride affect vision, muscle and nervous systems, joints. During treatment, kidney and liver failure, tachycardia, and depression may develop. “Some side effects of quinolone fluoride can occur long-term, adversely affect quality of life, and have irreversible effects on the body,” BfArM reports. If severe side effects occur, BfArM recommends discontinuing treatment with fluoroquinolones and consult a doctor. If you are only prescribed this drug, you should ask your doctor about possible alternatives and side effects.
The experts of the BfArM Institute collected the recommendations in one letter, but it is purely informational and recommendatory in nature. It also does not indicate in which cases doctors should prescribe fluoroquinolones, and in which not.
In the US, all fluoroquinolone preparations are marked with a Black Box Warning. It is used only for medicines that can cause very serious side effects.
