(ORDO NEWS) — Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, will soon receive a new official name. It will sound like Krung Thep Maha Nakhon. This is an abbreviated version of the real name, which has 176 characters.
The new official name, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, will not take effect until it has been reviewed by the committee responsible for verifying all bills. This will be the official name, but “Bangkok” will in many cases be listed alongside in brackets.
Krung Thep Maha Nakhon is the name of the capital in Thai. The name “Bangkok” comes from the old districts of the metropolis – Bangkok Noi and Bangkok Yai. It is widely used because it is easier for Europeans to pronounce.
The new official name of Bangkok is much shorter than the historical one: “Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit”.
In translation, this means “City of angels, the great city of the immortals, the majestic city of nine precious stones, the residence of the king, the city of royal palaces, the house of the incarnated gods, erected by Vishvakarman at the behest of Indra.”
This name is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest place name in the world: it has 168 letters.
