(ORDO NEWS) — At least 18 people died in Assam in April as lightning and thunderstorms hit parts of the state, an official said.
Houses and other infrastructure were also damaged due to bad weather, he said.
The northeastern state has been experiencing heavy rains since early April, accompanied by thunderstorms that leave a trail of destruction, the official said.
An Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin, updated before the end of Saturday, said three people were killed by lightning on Friday in Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Dhubri districts.
Within three days from April 15, 14 people died from lightning and thunderstorms. Among the dead were at least two minors, the official said.
A total of 4,630 people in 325 villages have been affected by heavy rains and thunderstorms over the past three days, the ASDMA bulletin said.
More than 1,000 houses were damaged in a month, as well as several Anganwadi schools and centers.
Power poles and trees were uprooted in many areas, disrupting power supplies and blocking roads, the bulletin said.
