(ORDO NEWS) — Experts conducted another study and found that the risk of collision of our planet with the huge asteroid Bennu is only 1 in 1750.
This result will remain relevant until 2300. It is worth noting that the risk has become slightly higher than previously thought, but there is no cause for concern. This was stated by representatives of NASA.
The US space agency has published information that it was able to collect using a special spacecraft OSIRIS-Rex. The unit is engaged in the delivery of asteroid samples to Earth.
Davide Farnocchia said that although the risk of collision increased slightly, it did not become critical. At the same time, the scientist believes that the situation has become even somewhat better.
OSIRIS-REx specialists launched in the fall of 2016. It did not enter orbit next to the potentially dangerous asteroid Bennu only two years later.
After that, the spacecraft studied the stone for two and a half years. At the same time, the device regularly recorded not only its location relative to our planet, but also the asteroid itself. Using the data provided, the experts were able to form the most accurate flight path of the space object.
Despite the fact that a lot of time has been spent on research, it is still problematic to determine how Bennu will begin to move after 2135. This year in September, the asteroid will fly close to our planet at a fairly close distance. How the Earth’s gravity affects the space rock will determine its further flight trajectory.
