(ORDO NEWS) — The French aerospace company Ariane Group has unveiled the concept of a reusable spacecraft that can deliver cargo weighing up to seven tons into space and carry up to five crew members.
SUSIE (short for Smart Upper Stage for Innovative Exploration, or Intelligent Upper Stage for Innovative Exploration) was introduced to the world at the International Astronautical Congress held in Paris from 18 to 22 September.
The fully reusable upper stage can serve as both an automatic cargo vehicle and a manned spacecraft, with a crew of up to five astronauts.
So far, SUSIE remains a concept that Europeans should implement in order to get a spacecraft that will ensure the development and operation of various European space projects – like flights to the ISS or its successors for many years to come.
