(ORDO NEWS) — Archaeologists have discovered a cluster of 570 ancient tombs dating from the Chunqiu Spring and Autumn period, 770-476 BC. BC e, to the Qing dynasty 1644-1911, in the city of Sanmenxia in the province of Henan Central China.
According to the Sanmenxia Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, all ancient burials were located in the territory of the Shanzhoucheng cemetery in the west of the city, which was excavated from September 2021 to September 2022.
Archaeologists have recovered more than 3,000 funerary items from the tombs, including bronze tripods, pots and plates.
It is noteworthy that for the first time since the founding of the city, three sets of bronze bells from the Zhangguo Warring States period, 475-221, were found. BC.
“Among the ancient tombs, 228 belong to the Chunqiu period and the Zhangguo period,” said Yan Fei, a researcher at the institute. “They are compactly arranged in a relatively ordered order,” he noted.
Yan Fei added that the entire layout of Shanzhoucheng Cemetery is well preserved in its original form, which provides valuable archaeological data for studying the structure of burial sites and socio-political changes during this period in the western part of Henan.
