(ORDO NEWS) — The “Terracotta Army” is believed to consist of 8,000 sculpted “warriors” located in three pits near the mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang (259-210 BC), who unified China in 221 BC. To date, about 2,000 of these “soldiers” have been excavated.
“Terracotta Army” remains one of the most mysterious objects in archeology
Qin Shi Huang became the ruler of Qin in 247 BC, one of several states vying for land and power in China. For decades, Qin grew, gradually seizing territories controlled by other states. In 221 BC. Qin’s rivals were defeated and Qin Shi Huang became emperor of all China.
Chinese historical texts say nothing about the “Terracotta Army”. This mysterious object may have been a way to elevate the emperor’s status. This was especially important to do, since after the death of Qin Shi Huang, his family was overthrown by a rebellion by the Han Dynasty. In addition, modern archaeologists often interpret the “Terracotta Army” as protecting Shi Huangdi in the afterlife.
The newly discovered warriors were excavated in “pit number one”. In this place are infantry soldiers and chariots. Some warriors are generals, as indicated by their more elaborate headgear.
Now the experts of the Museum of the Mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang are restoring the figures.
