(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists have found that antidepressants can harm people with severe heart disease. The drugs caused deformity of the mitral valve in patients.
The mitral valve must pass blood from the left atrium to the left ventricle. The researchers studied his condition in more than nine thousand patients with degenerative mitral regurgitation.
It turned out that antidepressants from the group of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs or SSRIs) increase regurgitation in mitral valve degeneration.
It was also found that in healthy mice receiving large doses of SSRIs, the mitral valve leaflets thicken. The scientists also specify that the negative effect was observed only for high doses of the drug.
