An X2-class flare occurred on the Sun

(ORDO NEWS) — Satellites in Earth orbit have detected an X2-class solar flare. The source is the outgoing spot AR3234. NASA‘s Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded an extreme ultraviolet flare.

Radiation from the flare ionized Earth’s upper atmosphere, causing shortwave radio blackouts over North and South America.

Aviators and radio amateurs may have noticed signal loss and other unusual propagation effects at frequencies below 30 MHz up to an hour after the flash.

Solar radio bursts currently being reported by the US Air Force suggest that the explosion could also have triggered the CME.
