(ORDO NEWS) — A section of the Great Wall of China during the Ming Dynasty collapsed after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake in the northwestern Chinese province of Qinghai.
Two meters of the Great Wall collapsed in Shandan county in northwestern China’s Gansu province, which is 114 kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake in Menyuan county in Haipei Tibet Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai.
After a strong seismic shock, the authorities organized an inspection of local cultural relics and found the site of the collapse. Primary protection has been installed, and repair and restoration work is underway.
The earthquake occurred in a sparsely populated area, but the tremors were felt by several large cities. No fatalities were reported, but nine people were injured, eight of whom have already been discharged from hospitals and one is still under surveillance.
Shi Yucheng, head of the Gansu Province Earthquake Agency, told the media that the nearest residential area is 40 kilometers from the epicenter, which is located in the earthquake zone, and the locals are already used to the tremors.
