(ORDO NEWS) — An international team of researchers led by scientists from Germany discovered near the center of the Milky Way (in which the Earth is also located) in the Sagittarius B2 gas and dust cloud, the largest alcohol molecule in space – isopropanol.
The gas and dust cloud Sagittarius B2 is located at a distance of 26 thousand light years from Earth, 120 parsecs from the center of the galaxy.
It was there that, using spectroscopy on the ALMA telescope, they were able to accidentally identify an isopropanol molecule, which is used, for example, for disinfection.
In addition, they found its isomer, which differs only in the carbon atom – propanol. These compounds were first seen in interstellar space. Scientists hope that their discovery will reveal how various substances can form in space.
