US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — African countries need $ 100 billion in emergency economic injections to support their national health systems in the context of the coronavirus pandemic. Such data are cited on Sunday by Bloomberg, citing the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).
Half of this amount can be obtained by refusing to pay interest on loans granted by international institutions by African countries to international institutions, ECA Executive Secretary Vera Songwe said.
According to her, Africa has never in its history faced such a large-scale crisis as the current pandemic.
Vera Songwe stressed that the peak of the pandemic will occur in Africa in the next 2 to 3 weeks, but its consequences will be felt in the coming 12 to 18 months.
According to the Secretary of ECA, a coordinated global effort is needed to help African countries as well as African businesses. “If the new coronavirus remains in only one country in Africa, this will affect the whole world,” she said.
