Africa: unknown reasons killed more than hundred elephants

US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — At the end of last month, 54 dead elephants were found in the Okavango River Delta, which is located in Botswana. Some 12 corpses were discovered some time before. If we count the elephants that died in May, and there were 44, the total number of dead animals is 110.

Local authorities said that the elephants have absolutely no signs of violent death, and the version of the departure seems implausible at all.

“About 90% of the elephants found by the latter are most likely old carcasses that could not be found earlier. But there are a few fresh bodies. There are no signs on any carcass that poachers are related to the death of animals , ”said Dimakatso Ntschebe .

Experts did not find anthrax in the dead elephants, which is a fairly common cause of death of a huge number of these animals. Some time ago, a statement was made that it was unlikely that someone decided to poison these giants. If they were poisoned, then a huge number of scavengers would die, which for a couple of months ate just the meat of elephants.

To investigate the death of elephants is prevented by the restriction in movement, which was established due to the pandemic. But we still managed to collect samples for testing.

Today, almost 130,000 African giants live in the wild in Botswana. In total, about 350 thousand elephants live in Africa. A lot of these animals were killed at the beginning of the last century, and only thanks to the huge efforts of specialists it was possible to restore their population.

It is worth noting that at the end of February this year, authorities began to issue licenses for the shooting of old animals. This pleasure is not cheap, but it will protect not only the wild animals themselves, but also their natural habitat. It is strictly forbidden to kill young individuals.
