(ORDO NEWS) — Geologists have found the first evidence that about 1.1 billion years ago, the Earth‘s magnetic field had a record high strength compared to more ancient and modern eras, according to the journal PNAS.
According to scientists, this discovery calls into question the theory of a gradual decrease in the strength of the magnetic field throughout the Proterozoic era, and also potentially indicates that the inner core of our planet appeared much earlier than is commonly believed.
In recent years, geologists have been actively trying to find out when the Earth acquired a magnetic field. It is almost impossible to accurately determine the time of its appearance, since the rocks of that time are almost not preserved.
At the same time, in recent years, researchers have found several evidence that a strong “magnetic shield” could have appeared on our planet about 4.2 billion years ago.
As scientists have stated, the existence of a powerful magnetic field of the Earth is due to the fact that inside its liquid molten core there is a solid inner part. According to various estimates, it was formed no earlier than 3.6 billion years ago.
