(ORDO NEWS) — On Thursday, Japan deployed military forces to help residents trapped by record snowfall that covered parts of the country, leaving 10,000 homes without electricity in the north and west of the country.
Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga called an emergency cabinet meeting and urged the public to exercise caution as local media reported that more than 1,000 vehicles were stuck on the highway connecting Tokyo with Niigata in the north.
Minakami, Gunma Prefecture reportedly experienced a record 2.17 meters of snow in 72 hours, while Yuzawa, Niigata Prefecture, famous for its skiing sports, experienced a record 1.8 meters on Thursday morning.
