(ORDO NEWS) — The truck-sized space rock flew just 19,833 km from the Earth’s surface at its closest point of convergence on Monday morning PST.
This puts the asteroid inside the ring, where many large artificial satellites revolve around the Earth at an altitude of 35,786 kilometers.
“Fortunately, at these heights, space is still pretty empty,” McDowell tweeted.
According to his estimates, the closest active satellite on the asteroid’s path was a military GPS satellite at a distance of about 2,000 kilometers.
NASA estimates the diameter of the asteroid to be 7.7 meters.
