(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists conducted a new study, during which they managed to identify the remains of a ship that sank a century and a half ago in the immediate vicinity of the city of Puerto Madryn in Argentina.
The Dolphin was a whaling ship and was built in the USA in the mid-18th century.
Scientists made their first conclusions after analyzing the type of wood used to build the ship.
“The Dolphin sank more than 150 years ago. It was 33 meters long and weighed 325 tons. Wood dating back to 1850 was used to build the ship. The ship was launched in November of the same year,” scientists say.
In addition, the frames and parts of the ship’s hull were carefully examined. It is worth paying attention to the fact that initially it was not possible to determine the type of ship, as well as the origin and age of the wood used.
Experts compared the obtained results with the North American Drought Atlas. It contains almost 30,000 species of trees, samples of which were collected over a period of more than 2,000 years.
Analysis showed that white oak was used for the whaling ship’s frames, and yellow pine and hornbeam were used for the hull and wooden nails. These breeds grew in the eastern part of the United States.
The study showed that some of the trees date back to 1679. At the same time, the oaks were cut down in 1849 – a year before construction began.
However, despite the coincidence of the research results with historical sources, experts still cannot say that this is definitely a whaling ship Dolphin.
The reason for this is that they have too little evidence of it. For example, they failed to find the maker’s mark or at least the Ship’s Bell.
