(ORDO NEWS) — An unusual phenomenon in the sky was photographed by the Subaru telescope on April 17. The spiral was seen near Mauna Kea, a volcano on the island of Hawaii. On the frame you can see it on the left side.
According to Live Science, the spiral was caused by a fuel jettison following the deorbit of the upper stage of a reusable Falcon 9 launch vehicle.
SpaceX launched it with the National Space Reconnaissance Administration NROL-85 satellite from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on April 17.
The Subaru Telescope is an 8.2-meter optical-infrared telescope located in Hawaii and operated by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan.
The facility operates at an altitude of 4,139 meters. Due to the difficulty of being in a rarefied atmosphere, most of Subaru’s staff work remotely, with only a few people remaining on site to operate the telescope.
