(ORDO NEWS) — Experts from the University of California have established how much the atmosphere of our planet has changed over the past 150 years. To do this, they carried out a thorough analysis of the chemical composition of ice that was formed on the territory of Antarctica in the middle of the last century.
It is reported by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The results shocked scientists somewhat. The study showed that the amount of hydrogen increased significantly during this time.
Until the middle of the last century, the indicator of matter remained relatively stable, but then it began to gradually increase and by the beginning of the 21st century increased by about 70%. At the same time, a very sharp increase was observed at the end of the 20th century, in the last 20 years.
Such results puzzled specialists a little. Previously, they believed that the main source of hydrogen was the production of synthesis gas. But in the past few decades, its production has decreased markedly, while emissions have only increased. This indicates that there is some other source, but experts do not yet know what it is.
They are going to do some more research in the near future to get an answer to this question.

Hydrogen is a greenhouse gas that, when released into the atmosphere, provokes a slower decay of methane and affects the formation of ozone. Because of this, excess heat cannot leave the Earth, which leads to its rapid heating.
