(ORDO NEWS) — The Austrian company PneumoCell has developed the concept of an inflatable housing to house people on the moon.
The habitat, called PneumoPlanet, will be able to accommodate up to 32 astronauts and will have 16 greenhouse domes that will allow humans to grow food in the harsh lunar environment.
Pneumo Planet is an ultralight regolith-coated inflatable structure that can operate autonomously. It will produce and process its own oxygen and food using solar energy.
In a YouTube presentation (see below), Lead Designer and CEO Thomas Herzig explains how PneumoPlanet’s mirrors will be placed using carbon fiber tubes attached to a spinning mechanism that tracks sunlight.
The new technology will allow natural sunlight to pass through the transparent film, providing 65 kilowatts of power or 265 watts per square meter.
PneumoCell says this is the ideal amount of light to enable photosynthesis and grow food for the lunar station crew.
