(ORDO NEWS) — On April 30, 2022, a powerful solar flare occurred on the Sun, which peaked at 13:47 GMT. NASA‘s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which constantly monitors the Sun, captured the event.
Solar flares are powerful bursts of energy. Flares and solar eruptions can affect radio communications, power grids, navigation signals and pose a danger to spacecraft and astronauts.
This flare is classified as an X-class flare. The X-class denotes the most intense outbreaks, and the number gives more information about its strength.
NASA constantly monitors the Sun and our space environment with spacecraft that study everything from solar activity to the solar atmosphere, particles and magnetic fields in the space around the Earth.
The Solar Dynamics Observatory is the first mission launched by NASA’s Living with a Star (LWS) program, a program aimed at understanding the causes of solar variability and its impact on Earth.
SDO is designed to help us understand the influence of the Sun on the Earth and near-Earth space by studying the solar atmosphere on small scales of space and time and simultaneously over many wavelengths.
