(ORDO NEWS) — The final pre-launch preparations for the launch of the first Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellite are currently underway.
The first satellite, called MTG-I1, built by a European industrial consortium led by Thales Alenia Space, is equipped with two new high-sensitivity instruments: a “Flexible Combined Imager” and a “Lightning Imager”, which will allow detect storms and extreme weather events earlier, and improve flight safety.
The mission is a collaboration between ESA and Eumetsat. The complete MTG system consists of six satellites. It should have been in operation for over 20 years.
The first Meteosat satellite was launched in 1977. The third generation of spacecraft will be the most advanced to date. It has improved image resolution and the ability to provide users with near real-time data.
The launch is currently scheduled for the end of 2022.
