(ORDO NEWS) — Researchers in Wisconsin have linked the disease that kills chimpanzees to new types of bacteria. Now they fear that it will go to the people.
An international team of scientists led by researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison has reported for the first time about a new and deadly disease that is killing chimpanzees in a nature reserve in Sierra Leone.
The disease, reported Wednesday in the journal Nature Communications, is caused by a newly discovered species of bacteria and emerged as the world is battling a devastating pandemic caused by another new adversary, the coronavirus.
Although chimpanzee disease has not yet been found in humans, these two species share about 99% of their genetic material, or DNA.
