A micrometeorite damaged the mirror of the James Webb telescope more than previously thought

(ORDO NEWS) — NASA has released images of the James Webb Space Telescope’s mirrors showing that the micrometeoroid that crashed into one of the mirrors in May was larger than first thought. The damage can be seen in the lower right corner of the second image below.

During the commissioning period of the newest space telescope, the main mirror survived a total of six micrometeor impacts.

NASA researchers are still trying to assess the true impact of micrometeor impacts on the observatory’s performance. The good news is that, according to NASA, “only a small part of the telescope area was affected.”
