A hybrid of a giant goldfish weighing a 10-year-old child was caught in France

(ORDO NEWS) — The record-breaking goldfish was caught in Champagne, France, where an angler pulled a 30-kilogram specimen from the Bluewater lakes.

The fact is that 20 years ago this “hippopotamus” called The Carrot was released into a reservoir, and since then it has become one of the largest in the world.

There are many breeds of goldfish, but they tend to be the hardy golden varieties of the domesticated carp. They come in a variety of forms, such as the sky-eyed goldfish, and are sometimes crossed with other fish, as is the case with the Carrot.

In 20 years of swimming, the fish has grown to over 30 kilograms in weight, which is about the size of an average 10-year-old child.

Andy Hackett from Worcestershire (UK) took 25 minutes to catch her before taking some photos and releasing her.

How do goldfish get so big?

The huge size of the Carrot serves as a reminder not to let your pets go free, because some types of goldfish are very hardy and can easily grow to huge sizes.

Giant goldfish have been reported to be a problem in parts of the Americas, where they destroy the silt layer and uproot plants, with pet owners believed by authorities to be the culprit.

Goldfish released into wild waters are invasive and may even outcompete native species for resources. It takes an insatiable appetite to bloat like this, and in the process they can pick up and transmit parasites.

Goldfish are generalists who will eat whatever is offered to them and, depending on the breed, can live surprisingly long lives.

Long-lived breeds can grow to half a meter or more, and if they are crossed with another fish, such as the Carrot, they can become even larger.

How big do goldfish get?

The reason we associate goldfish with miniature aquarium animals is that, to a certain extent, their size is determined by their environment. A fish kept in a small aquarium on modest food will forever remain small.

However, if you transplant the same goldfish into a large aquarium with plenty of food, it will quickly grow into a much larger fish.
