(ORDO NEWS) — In the Oder River, which flows into Germany and Poland, fish are dying in huge numbers. Countries are warning of an environmental catastrophe. About 100 tons of dead fish were recovered from the river.
Germany and Poland are doing everything possible to find out the reason for the mass death of fish in the river. Countries suspect that the water has been poisoned.
People are advised not to swim in the river and not to touch the water. The Ministry of the Environment in the German state of Brandenburg said that mercury was found in the river and they said it came from Poland.
“And this was not reported through the warning systems, so we were only able to react when we saw dead fish,” Brandenburg’s environment ministry said.
Poland also believes it is poisoning but says it needs until Sunday to analyze water quality data. According to Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, a lot of substances were found in the water that could cause the death of fish.
It will take years before life returns to the river. He considers it likely that a huge amount of chemical waste was dumped into the river. He added that the perpetrators will be found and punished.
