(ORDO NEWS) — The residents of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines were ordered to remain vigilant after the Caribbean volcano came back to life.
La Soufriere is the highest point in Saint Vincent, located near the northern tip of the country, but remained dormant for decades before it began spewing ash on Tuesday this week, AP reported.
Steam, gas and a volcanic dome formed by lava reaching the surface can also be seen over the volcano, according to the Caribbean Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA).
The government of the country, made up of a chain of islands with a population of over 100,000, has raised the hazard level to orange, which means eruptions can occur in less than 24 hours.
Fabrice Fontaine of the Martinique Volcanological and Seismological Observatory told the AP that this is the first time a warning of this kind has been issued since the last volcanic eruption in 1932.
