According to scientists from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, the Hong Kong Baptist University, there are special enzymes that cause triclosan (an antimicrobial substance) to destroy the intestines.
This substance is contained, for example, in toothpaste. The results of the study were published in the publication Nature Communications.
To identify enzymes that have a damaging effect on the intestines, the researchers combined bacterial proteins with triclosan.
After that, they were able to easily prevent the effect of triclosan on the state of the intestines in mice.
As a result, the animals disappeared from the signs of colitis, and damage to the colon, a form of inflammatory bowel disease, was prevented.
