(ORDO NEWS) — A volunteer who was lucky enough to find a rare artifact discovered it quite by accident. She was sifting the soil removed from the excavation site and a gold bead got stuck in the sieve.
She approached the archaeologist to hear his expert opinion. He confirmed that the girl had found a golden bead.
The bead is made of pure gold. She is approximately 1600 years old. The archaeologist says that it is proof that jewelers at that time were talented craftsmen.
Amir Golani, a doctor at the Israel Antiquities Authority, explained how rare such a find is. Only the best of the best could make such a bead.
The jeweler gave the golden shape of the flower, which means he was already melting metals, controlling the temperature.
Most likely, this bead was part of a necklace or bracelet. Such an ornament could be afforded only by people belonging to the upper class: rulers, merchants.
By the way, the building from where the earth was brought from the excavations belongs to the majestic buildings. It is decorated with mosaics, and only very rich people could afford such floors.
Experts say that the technology of making such beads has its origins in Mesopotamia.
The jewelry got to Jerusalem most likely as a result of trade. Perhaps some craftsman brought jewelry that he had made to sell at a high price.
It is possible that the jewelry was a family heirloom that was passed down from generation to generation. When you only find a bead from him, it is very difficult to say something more precise, concrete.
Now archaeologists will conduct excavations in the house more thoroughly.
They hope to find other fragments of the precious artifact, and maybe collect it. If they succeed, the ornament will be handed over to the national museum.
