(ORDO NEWS) — On November 4, 1922, archaeologists led by Howard Carter found a step that led to the entrance to Tutankhamun’s tomb.
On November 26, they opened this tomb after more than 3,000 years of being locked up. And many of those who then entered this tomb soon died.
Like all urban legends and sensations, the supposed “Curse of the Pharaoh” has grown to epic proportions over the years. Here are the stories of several people who were allegedly cursed by the legendary Egyptian king.
George Herbert
The man who financed the excavation of Tutankhamun’s tomb was the first to succumb to the supposed curse.
This came just months after the tomb was opened, and just six weeks after the press began reporting on the “mummy’s curse” that was thought to have afflicted everyone involved in the excavation of Tutankhamen’s tomb.
Sir Bruce Ingham
Archaeologist Howard Carter, who discovered the tomb, gave the paperweight to his friend Bruce Ingham.
The paperweight is said to be made from a mummified hand, and the bracelet is engraved with the phrase “Cursed be he who disturbs my body.”
His house burned down shortly after receiving the gift. When Ingham tried to rebuild the house, it was washed away by a flood.
George Jay Gould
Gould was a wealthy American financier and railroad executive who visited Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1923 and fell ill soon after. He never recovered and died of pneumonia a few months later.
Aubrey Herbert
It is said that George Herbert’s half-brother suffered from Tutankhamen’s curse because of his association with his brother, who unearthed the king’s tomb.
Aubrey Herbert was born with a progressive eye disease and was completely blind towards the end of his life.
Doctors speculated that his rotten, infected teeth were somehow affecting his vision, and Herbert ripped them all out to restore his sight.
But he died of sepsis as a result of an operation just five months after his brother’s death from the “curse”.
Hugh Evelyn White
Her Evelyn-White, a British archaeologist, may have visited Tutankhamun’s tomb and helped excavate it. By 1924, after learning that twenty of her fellow archaeologists had died, Evelyn Her White committed suicide.
But first, she is said to have written in her own blood the inscription: “I have succumbed to the curse that makes me disappear.”
Howard Carter
And Carter never had mysterious, inexplicable illnesses, and his house stood quietly. He died of lymphoma at the age of 64. Perhaps the pharaohs saw fit to rid him of their curse.
