(ORDO NEWS) — No one can determine how old the fish was caught and how long it was in the lake. An incredible discovery was made by accident in South Carolina. While checking the water quality in the small Lake Oak Grove, experts caught a goldfish weighing 4 kg and about 38 cm long. The fish is very beautiful, so it attracted attention not only for its impressive size, but also for its appearance.
Experts say that the average weight of a goldfish ranges from 90-270 grams. In the wild, some individuals can grow up to two kilograms. In this case, the length of the fish ranges from 12 to 40 centimeters. Experts noted that they cannot even guess how old the fish they accidentally caught from the lake are. Ten years ago, when the lake water quality was last analyzed, scientists did not see anything like it.
To check the state of the ecosystem in the lake, experts use a special method – electrolysis. The fish is slightly shocked and floats to the surface of the water. At the same time, no harm is done to the marine inhabitants. This technique allows professionals to check for signs that may indicate poor water quality.
Experts said that the lake is located downstream of the nuclear power plants, so the version that the fish could grow to this size under the influence of chemicals is ruled out.
The Guinness Book of Records indicates that the largest goldfish was an individual that belongs to Joris Gijsbers, who lives in the Netherlands. The length of the fish is 47 cm. The weight of the record holder is not indicated.
