(ORDO NEWS) — Any mountains usually represent a compressed rock, but sometimes solid stones come across on Earth. Their size can be huge – some are able to compete with the city in size. Scientists call them monoliths and even classified the largest of them.
El Capitan, USA
The mountain looms over Yosemite Valley. El Capitan is considered the world’s largest granite monolith. Its peak is at an altitude of 910 meters. This is a favorite place for climbers and base jumpers.
The monolith is located on the territory of the national park of the same name in Australia. The geological formation rises 860 meters above the surrounding plain. The area occupied by the monolith is 47.95 sq. km.
Rock of Gibraltar, Gibraltar
A monolithic limestone rock 426 meters high was formed about 200 million years ago as a result of the collision of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates.
Inside the rock there are more than 100 caves, formed as a result of the washing out of calcite from limestone. The rock forms a peninsula, on the western slope of which the city itself and the Barbary macaque reserve are located.
