(ORDO NEWS) — A 29-year-old South Korean woman forged her birth certificate to pretend to be a 16-year-old and enroll in a high school in New Jersey. She claims that she only did it out of nostalgia.
This January, Hyejong Shin, a 29-year-old South Korean and US citizen, made international headlines after she was caught impersonating a 16-year-old girl at New Brunswick High School in New Jersey.
Just days after her high school adventure, New Brunswick officials discovered that she had forged her birth certificate in order to gain admission.
Everything came to light during the verification process, but recently revealed information indicates that Shin was reported by several students, with whom she began acting strangely.
The young Korean woman claims that she never intended to hurt anyone and that she just wanted to ease the experience, which helped her feel safe growing up.
“No student or student has ever been in danger, and this whole thing has more to do with my client wanting to return to a safe and welcoming place, to an environment she remembers fondly, and nothing more,” Darren told the court. Gelber, Shin’s lawyer.
Sheen has pleaded guilty to a series of charges that could carry a maximum sentence of five years in prison, but her lawyer is desperate to convince the court that his client was lonely and confused.
She was going through a contentious divorce and her entire family lived in South Korea, so there was no one around to support her.
Shin ended up remembering her time in high school and the atmosphere she missed so much, so she decided to pretend she went back to school.
Gelber’s lawyer acknowledged that the whole situation is very strange and it can be very difficult for people to understand, but added that while there are personal issues to deal with, Hyejong Shin never intended to hurt anyone.
Apparently, Shin’s youthful appearance deceived both the high school staff and other teenage students, as no one suspected that she was ten years older than her peers, but the document verification process and her “weird” attitude towards other students she invited to talk, they gave her away.
