(ORDO NEWS) — Japanese archaeologists working in the city of Nara discovered a very large bronze mirror and an iron sword, which date back to the 4th century AD.
The length of the found sword is 237 centimeters, and the maximum size of the mirror weighing 5.7 kilograms reaches 64 centimeters in length and 31 centimeters in width.
Rare artifacts were found during excavations of a very large mound, the diameter of which reaches 109 meters.
According to researchers who have been studying this burial structure since 2018, an influential person who lived during the existence of the Yamato state is buried in it.
Archaeologists have noted that the discovered objects were probably considered to be means of protection from evil spirits.
The sword itself appears to have been made for ritual purposes and was never used in combat. According to scientists, this is the longest sword of this period that has ever been found in East Asia.
